Rich Roots Flower Co. is Denver’s Newest Floral Company

Meet the Owners, Leigh + Kate

Hi Leigh + Kate! Can you tell us about your new journey owning Rich Roots Flower Co.?

We are Kate Fitzpatrick and Leigh Richards, co-owners of Rich Roots and sisters-in-law! Our business name comes from 1st- Rich in the name comes from Kate’s maiden name and Leigh’s married name and 2nd- Roots because we are family!

The idea was born from a wreath making class, put on by Jess of Pickletown Flower Co, where Jess mentioned that she was pivoting her business from Pickletown into a new floral coaching business, Fuse Floral. We were both looking for something new and Jess agreed to take us on as her first coaching clients.

Kate is creative behind all of the designs and Leigh is the entrepreneurial type so we are the perfect pairing. It was the right place, right time kind of thing!

What are some of your favorite arrangements you’ve made? Or current ones people can buy for the holidays or gifts coming up?

Since we are gearing up for Valentine’s Day we are thrilled to offer a variety of color schemes (red, pink, neutral and purple themed arrangements) with price points that will appeal to all clients.

Flowers truly make others feel connected and it is wonderful to hear other’s stories of why they came to us.  This past December we were touched when a client reached out to make an ornament for their gender reveal.  They wanted their daughter to open the surprise on Christmas morning so their family could share in the wonderful news.  We were so touched that she trusted us with such a big life event.

Can you tell us about your product offerings?

At the Farmer’s Market, we offer seasonal dried florals.  They range from custom bouquets, wreaths, and vases to our DIY Bar! You can grab a pre-made design, faux wreath, or bring your own vase from home. This is one of our favorite services we offer because it is based on the client’s aesthetic, vibe and price point. A Pearl Street favorite is our DIY Bar.  It is an interactive experience for market goers to be able to design their own bud vase.

You will also find our flower bike at the market! With the bike being mobile we also use it for private and corporate events – bridal showers, baby showers, team building, birthday parties – the possibilities with the bike are endless! For Valentine’s Day this year, we will have the bike at 1144 Fifteenth Street, where you can buy a variety of bouquets that last forever.

This past December was our first holiday season.  We had a lot of fun doing custom home installations, corporate gifting, holiday markets and our ornament bar!

When we host workshops, we will always advertise on Instagram and our website.

What are some events you’ve created flower arrangements for that people can book you for?

What neighborhood is your business in? Why did you choose this location?

We don’t currently have a brick and mortar but you can find us at the Pearl Street Farmer’s Market during the summer/fall season! You can also purchase Grab N Go bouquets and other designs at either of our current partners – Lucky’s Bakeshop in Boulder or Golden Roots Salon in Golden! In 2024, we hope to expand our partnerships with other bakeries, coffee shops, salons and boutiques around the Metro Area!

How would you describe the Personality or “Vibe” of Denver?

Denver is eclectic and creative.  When we moved to the Denver area, the first question people asked us was “what do you Iike to do?”   This is drastically different than the question “what do you do?” or “who do you work for?” that we often heard back home, leading us to Rich Roots…”what do we like to do?” We like flowers and the power they have to bring people together.  People here have interesting backgrounds, stories, and hobbies and we get to tap into that through our various floral designs and clients we work with.

The Farmer’s Market scene in Denver feels like the heart of the city. It brings others from the neighborhood and even different states together. Everyone is there to share in the same experience, it’s such a lovely thing. We are always amazed at what we can find in common with anyone who pops by the tent.

Are you from Colorado? What neighborhood did you choose to call home and why?

We were both born and raised in the Chicagoland area but moved to Colorado during the pandemic. Kate and her family landed in Golden in 2020, and Leigh’s family moved to the Edgewater neighborhood 6-months later.

Leigh – when we first visited Colorado I fell in love with Sloan’s Lake. I loved the juxtaposition of the city and the mountain views from the lake. We knew when we moved we also wanted to be close to Kate’s family and the mountains so we narrowed in our neighborhood pretty quick. We love taking the dog and stroller for neighborhood walks that often end up at Edgewater Beer Garden!

Kate-I have been bringing my family to Colorado to visit extended family since 2016.  We found a sense of calm with the mountains, rural farms and slower pace of life.  In 2020, it was a “now or never” moment for us to hitch a trailer with our kids and make our way out west. After deciding it was right, we rented in a neighborhood where the kids could meet their school friends and we could figure out if Golden was the right fit for us. After 3 months of being in Colorado, we decided we were hooked. We then bought a house to continue growing our roots.

We always say the gray, cold days in Chicago drove us out. The sunshine and outdoor lifestyle in Colorado can’t be beat! But we both attribute our husbands as the catalyst for our moves. They had a vision for our lives here and we are happy we let them convince us!

What are some challenges you’ve faced along your journey?

Managing inventory is always a challenge with a business like ours especially as we are just beginning our journey.  It sounds cliche but we love the business so much that it makes it difficult to put a value on our time.  We have growing families, but we also want to attend  as many events and serve as many clients as possible.
