Meet Michel Velazquez | Denver Based Artist

@velart_denver_co

Hi Michel! Can you tell us your backstory leading up to becoming a Denver artist?

My name is A. Michel Velazquez.  I  graduated college at 23 years old from the University of Jalisco. My original passion was poetry – publishing two poetry books before moving to Denver in 2006. As I  tried to find a path in a new city there was a time of darkness: economically, physically, emotionally. In an attempt to rediscover who I was as a person I went back to my roots. Painting was always meant to be more than a hobby. With little money for supplies I found myself searching for items on the streets of Denver that could work as a medium. I never thought he would become an artist, but now, as I attempt to  liven my client spaces with my artwork. I feel in touch with my artistic identity.

 Are you from Colorado? Which neighborhood did you eventually choose to call home?

I am originally from Guadalajara MX- I now call Downtown Denver home. It is because the diversity of different people and businesses that inspire me.

Why did you choose Dairy Block neighborhood / Moda Pink Gallery Boutique for your exhibit? And how long will your work be there?

 My original pop up gallery here on the block was Brighter than Love. The reason I chose this space is because I have seen this new space in Denver grow rapidly and even through the pandemic the community here have been extremely supportive. I will be here for some time since I actually am the home artist to Venturx- Lodo. Moda Pink gallery boutique will be ending in May.

If someone would like to commission a custom piece from you-What would the process entail?

I typically schedule an appointment at my gallery. I like to get to know the reasoning behind the custom request and hear their story. It also gives me the chance to let them see my many different styles. If they are long distance – email or phone call works as well.

How would you describe the Personality or “Vibe” of Denver?

Diverse and supportive. Denver has helped sculpt me into the artist I am today.

What are some of your favorite Denver based businesses/places you love?

I have a handful but for food it would have to be El Rey Del Taco Food Truck ( in front of Matchbox Bar Thursday- Sat). For art of course the Dairy Block Alley . Red Rocks concerts are always a must when visiting Denver Co.
