Can you tell us how you came to own Pickleball Food Pub?
My name is Adam Mackey and my wife’s name is Bailey Mackey, we both work in the medical field in Sales (me) and as an RN (Bailey). We have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to find something fun and exciting that is a break from time to time from the medical field.
With all of the reports of outdoor pickleball facilities closing in the Denver area due to noise, we looked to the indoor space of pickleball. 16 months later, we are the proud owners of our very first business and we couldn’t be happier to say that we are our own bosses now.
Make sure you keep an eye out on the expansion of Aurora facility for our outdoor court and patio opening this summer, as well as, summer tournaments where teams can earn prizes and pickleball merchandise!
What all does Pickleball Food Pub have to offer?
The Pickleball Food Pub offers indoor court reservations that can be booked up to a week in advance for as long as you like. We have a ball machine for individuals or couples who want to work on their game. There are also leagues that are going on right now Monday through Thursday in different groups such as Men’s league, Women’s league and Mixed leagues. Those leagues have different levels of play ranging from beginner all the way to advanced.
We also offer bookings for parties and events such as corporate events, birthday parties and even small get togethers. Although we do not offer food right now, that is through partnerships in our complex, we do offer a wide variety of drink options and have a hybrid bar with beers on tap.
Why did you choose the Aurora and Westminster for your locations?
Aurora and Wesminster were not only strategic locations that border the Denver area, we also wanted the business to be cost-effective. This means that picking a smaller or less-costly location means that we can offer great rates for all of our customers.
What Denver Neighborhood did you choose to call home for yourselves?
My wife and I are originally from Michigan and have set our roots down in Colorado for the past 8 years. We bought our first home a year and a half ago and now reside in Commerce City We chose this are due to the new developments and the growth that is close to the airport.
What challenges have you faced as small business owners?
The challenges that we faced were the new challenges of being a business owner. There was a lot in terms of construction approvals, city approvals and a lot of licenses to obtain. It was quite a long process but the city was very helpful in answering any questions that we had along the way and were very easy to work with. Fortunately, we did not face any pandemic issues with our business since we have only been open since January 6th of this year at our Aurora location. Westminster was open at the tail end of Covid so the effect was minimal.
What are some pricing examples for Pickleball at your Pub?
Anyone who is just trying out the sport should join our weekend open play which is $15 for two hours of play in the morning from 8:00am to 10:00am. Beyond having the best open play deal, we also offer beginner lessons on Friday’s from 6:00pm to 7:00pm and also credit our new players with credit for future play.
How would you describe the personality or “Vibe” of Denver?
The personality/vibe of Denver to me is fun, adventurous, always up for a challenge, inviting, free and most of all: beautiful. The city has so much to offer and we are glad to be a part of it.
