Meet Julie Rothe

Tell us a bit about your business + back story leading to where you are now as an artist?

My name is Julie Rothe, my business is ModStik Designs. When I started creating artwork, I never imagined I would make a career out of it. At the time ModStik began, I was dealing with a lot of pain due to a chronic illness. Artwork was my way of coping with the pain. My friends encouraged me to sell my work, and to my surprise, people started purchasing my designs! The part time hobby snowballed into a full time career from there.

What is the process like of creating your unique art pieces?

First, I have to find the weathered wood I want to use. I usually haul a few truckloads of wood a month. My dad helps me haul and disassemble the pieces so I have materials to work with. Then, it’s just a lot of cutting, painting, and stapling things together to make some unique pieces of artwork!

What are some of your favorite pieces you have done?

My favorite design is my most recent. It’s called Mount Evans Night, and features a silhouette of my view of Mount Evans near my house. It has a starry sky background, and a tree line silhouette in the foreground. This piece is most distinguished by its diamond shape. The original piece is hanging at Java Groove Coffee Shop in downtown Evergreen.

Where is your business located? How can people purchase artwork?

I work from my home in Evergreen, Colorado. Most people purchase artwork through my website (www.modstikdesigns.com) or they send me a DM through Facebook or Instagram.

Do you have any events or promotions coming up you’d like people to know about?  (Will you be at any outdoor markets in 2022?)

I will have a booth at the RiNo Showcase Festival this summer on June 11th, July 17th, and August 27th at Number Thirty Eight. I hope to join a few more festivals, so keep an eye on my Instagram or Facebook pages to stay in the loop!

Are you from CO? Why did you choose to call your neighborhood home?

I was born and raised in Arvada, Colorado. I moved to Evergreen six years ago, and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. The mountains have always felt like home to me, and all of my artwork is inspired by my mountain lifestyle

What do you love about Denver?

I love how supportive Denver is of the artist community! There are so many independent businesses and restaurants, and everyone supports each other.

What are your favorite local Denver businesses/places?

My favorite businesses are located near me in Evergreen. Nothing beats a chai at my favorite local coffee shop, Java Groove, or some tacos from Maya’s Cantina and Grill!

How would you describe the personality of Denver?

Denver is unique in its artist-friendly culture, and most people embrace the outdoorsy lifestyle you can find here.
