Meet Julie Scarlata, a Berkeley local who owns Lalu. Lalu is based on the premise that kids learn life skills through art. “Lalu’s art classes help children develop their imagination and creativity, gain confidence by providing an open and accepting learning environment, build fine and gross motor skills, encourage creative problem-solving, and promote an understanding of themselves and the world around them.” No kids? – well they even have classes for adults too!

What neighborhood do you live in?

Berkeley!

Why did you choose that Berkeley?

Living in Berkeley puts us close to both Tennyson and Highland Square. We love the easy walk and bike-ability to these vibrant growing areas as well as the easy access to the mountains. The location can’t be beat. We also love the community feel – on any given day, we can run into people we know.

What are your favorite local places?

We love the explosion of restaurants in the area. There are so many diverse and interesting venues. It doesn’t hurt that we can go out to eat at a wonderful restaurant or local coffee within a 1-2 mile radius. If we can walk there, we go there! I also love to shop along Tennyson Street – so many wonderful boutiques, bookstores, and unique shops. You can find a gift for anyone!

What do you love about Denver?

I love the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the city. It’s truly family friendly, healthy, and a community that takes care of one another!

Are you from CO?

My father was in the Army so I grew up moving every 2-3 years. I moved here after college and have been in Colorado for 18 years now…I guess you could say I found home here.

How would you describe the personality or “vibe” of Denver? Your neighborhood?

Denver is relaxed, open, and very friendly. It’s an active and growing city with so many wonderful neighborhoods. The Berkeley neighborhood is a perfect example of a vibrant and thriving community that is also incredibly family friendly. It’s such a great place for people with kids – we have four parks nearby!

How would you describe your personality?

Moving around allowed me to experience different cultures, communities, and people Stateside and overseas. I love learning about other people and their experiences. My love of the arts allows me to celebrate people and their uniqueness.
